Nassau County & Suffolk County State and Federal Lawyers
Criminal Defense
Many people who are arrested in Suffolk and Nassau counties in New York don't understand their rights. That can be costly to anyone who is accused of a crime. By making statements to police without a lawyer's advice, you could end giving the State the information it needs to convict you.
Domestic Violence
Twenty years ago, if the police went to a home in Suffolk or Nassau county on a domestic violence call, they would usually tell the male to relax, take a walk, and come back later after he had calmed down. Today, the police have gone from one extreme to another: that of mandatory arrest.
DUI/DWI
People who are arrested for DUI or DWI in Nassau and Suffolk counties have more than their driver's licenses to worry about. They can also lose their cars. In New York, the police can start a civil forfeiture proceeding to take your vehicle in a DWI case if you had a previous drunk-driving arrest, if you were in an accident, or if you blew over a .15. We don’t have a subway system in Nassau and Suffolk counties, so losing your driver's license (not to mention your car) is a major inconvenience.
Assault
Assault charges are very winnable cases in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Many juries view an assault charge as two people who got into a fight, and they don't want to get into who did what. As long as a weapon wasn't used and there was not extreme violence, the jury won't find the person guilty. In one of the assault cases we tried, our client punched a man and broke his nose, but was found not guilty by a jury.
White-Collar Crimes
The old saying, "A grand jury could indict a ham sandwich," is close to the truth, at least in New York. More than likely, if a district attorney presents a case of fraud, embezzlement, or RICO racketeering to a grand jury, they are going to obtain an indictment. However, that doesn't mean the government can prove its case.
Drug Charges
A drug charge is a serious problem. While most people focus on immediate consequences such as jail time, the future consequences can be worse. If you are found guilty, you could have a criminal record for the rest of your life, making it harder to find work, rent an apartment, or get a loan. If you are an immigrant, pleading guilty to a drug charge can even lead to removal or deportation proceeding.
Immigration
Our lawyers have a background in both criminal law and immigration law. Having this background puts us in a better position to defend immigrants who are charged with crimes. We can negotiate with prosecutors to try and avoid plea bargains that would result in removal or deportation.
Criminal Appeals
If you think you have been wrongly convicted of a crime in Suffolk or Nassau counties, or your sentence was unjust, you should contact a criminal appeals attorney as soon as possible. Anyone convicted of a state or federal crime has a right to an appeal of their conviction or their sentence.
